Last Christmas sales of the 2013 calendar, the second of its kind, entitled Insane Asylums of England, were simply crazy. The British certainly took to this eccentric calendar, particularly those in the health care profession. The calendar featured some of the most notorious asylums built during the Victorian era.
The calendar is the brainchild of Kevin Beresford, President of the Roundabout Appreciation Society. He understood how controversial the subject might be, so the asylums selected are no longer in use. He also added, “The thing with insane asylums is they are often these wonderful old Victorian buildings that are now disappearing from our landscape.”
While well intentioned, many of these places became known for their inhumane treatment of society’s most vulnerable, the mentally ill. Some though like Cane Hill featured for July in the previous year’s calendar were more progressive. It was built back in 1882 and eventually closed in 1991. Some of its residents included Charlie Chaplain’s mother, and both Michael Caine and David Bowie’s brothers.
